Lora-Based Offline Emergency Communication System

Emergency communication becomes critically important during natural disasters, remote-area operations, and network outages, where conventional communication systems relying on cellular or internet infrastructure often fail. This paper presents the design and implementation of a LoRa-based Offline Emergency Communication System that enables reliable long-range communication without internet connectivity. The proposed system employs Arduino Nano microcontrollers integrated with SX1278 LoRa transceivers operating at 433 MHz to establish peer-to-peer wireless communication between two nodes. Predefined emergency messages, including "HELP ME," "I AM SAFE," and "EMERGENCY," are transmitted using push-button inputs and displayed on a 16×2 LCD at the receiving node with minimal latency. The prototype demonstrates bidirectional communication with a communication range of approximately 100–300 m indoors and 2–5 km outdoors, depending on environmental conditions, while maintaining low power consumption and high reliability. Experimental results indicate successful message delivery with a response time of less than one second under normal operating conditions. The proposed system offers a simple, cost-effective, and scalable solution for emergency communication in disaster-prone and infrastructure-deficient regions. Future enhancements include GPS-based location tracking, message encryption, mobile application integration, and multi-node LoRa networking to improve system functionality and user safety.
